To select the filter, use the online filter calculator

The online filter calculator calculates the correct filter size, generates the complete technical data sheets and provides the STAUFF order designations

To make the task of selecting a filter less daunting, STAUFF has developed an Online Filter Calculator.

This new web-based tool will assist in the selection of the most suitable hydraulic filter based on the application parameters entered.

The Online Filter Calculator calculates the correct filter size, generates the complete technical data sheets, and provides the STAUFF ordering codes.

Filtration is becoming increasingly important

Filtration is an increasingly important topic for the owners and operators of hydraulic equipment. Demand-based filtration of the hydraulic fluid creates a central prerequisite for a continuously high output of the hydraulic system. The filtration system and the resulting fluid cleanliness is a requirement for the efficient operation of the sophisticated equipment used today. It also increases the service life of components such as pumps and valves while avoiding system failure and downtime.

Difficult and time-consuming task ...

Design engineers, however, face a difficult and time-consuming task when it comes to selecting the optimum hydraulic filter. A number of parameters have to be taken into account – among them the maximum flow rate of the filter, the viscosity and density of the hydraulic fluid as well as the filter grade and filter material. The filter differential pressure (pressure loss) is calculated using these parameters and compared to the maximum permissible pressure loss. If the calculated loss is higher than desired, the calculation has to start again. The following principle applies: “As much filtration as necessary, as little pressure loss as possible.” The reason for this is that pressure loss has a negative impact on the power output of the hydraulic system.

... now made simple

This task is now simple for design engineers: The Online Filter Calculator has been launched on the STAUFF homepage. It allows fast selection of exactly the right hydraulic filter for the individual application with just a few clicks, based on the system parameters.

The user is guided through a menu to enter the selection parameters without the need to register or log in. The configuration starts with the selection of the desired filter type (pressure, return-line, inline or bypass filter) and valve (bypass, return, reversing or multi-function valve).

Once the user has selected the filter media and filter grade in micrometres in the next step, the configurator asks for volumetric flow and system pressure as well as viscosity, temperature and ISO type of the hydraulic medium used.

Making comparisons easy

Based on this information, the configurator suggests several filter options. A table shows all suggested filter housings and elements along with technical data, making comparisons easy.

When the user has selected a filter, he is requested to select the desired sealing material, the connection and the indicator type. This completes the configuration and the selected filter is displayed with all technical data, including installation and connection dimensions, feature characteristics and the drawing. An inquiry can be sent to STAUFF directly from the configurator.
